Stop Hating Your Current Self to Grow

The pressure to "reinvent" yourself in January often backfires.

There’s a strong message this time of year: New Year. New You.

It sounds motivating.

But the message hidden is that is that the current you—the old you—is somehow wrong or needs fixing.

Psychologists call this a deficit mindset: the belief that change only happens by rejecting who you already are. And it usually backfires.

Because you’re not a house to be gutted and rebuilt.

You’re a human being who grows by adding, not erasing.

And you can clear the noise.

Instead of resolving to become someone else next week, why don’t you be who you are—by choice.
