Why forced happiness backfires

The pressure to "be merry" often creates the opposite effect.

There’s a strange pressure right now.
The pressure to perform joy.

Like if you’re not visibly festive, the story says you’re doing something wrong.

But emotions don’t work on command.
And when we try to force them, it usually backfires.

Psychology shows that pushing emotions down tends to increase stress, not reduce it.

That’s why when your feeling doesn’t match how you think you should be feeling, you’re getting tension and that’s gonna go somewhere.

So try this: Don’t perform.

If things are loud, just let them be loud.
If their low-key, just go with it.

Relief often comes when you drop the performance. You got this.
